Jaw Surgery Recovery Timeline

Surgery Day:

  • Expect to be eating or drinking through a syringe or straw depending on your surgeons instructions
  • When you wake up from surgery, you will most likely have a sore throat because a nasal tube was passed through the nose and down the throat for oxygen/anesthesia
  • Weakness, drowsiness, and dizziness is not uncommon after surgery since the effects of the anesthesia can last up to 2-3 days
  • Sleeping is difficult because of the discomfort and pain in the face (Pain meds can help) and also because you will have to sleep with your head up to reduce the oncoming swelling
  • Muscle spasms near the jaw region could occur which is known to be painful
  • Get used to wearing ice packs around your face
  • Speaking is not advised so you probably won't be talking that much directly after the surgery
  • You will be drooling a lot
  • Blood might come out from your nose and mouth for up to 3 days post surgery
  • Expect to be numb on the cheeks, lips, chin, and gums
  • You will be on a clear liquid diet after surgery until 2 days post op
  • You won't be able to brush your teeth before you sleep after the surgery

Week 1: The Hardest Week of Recovery

  • You will definitely need someone to help take care of you during this first week
  • You will be visiting your surgeon for your weekly post-op check up
  • During check-up, the sugeon will give you elastic bands to place in your mouth to keep you from opening your jaw very wide and could be very uncomfortable at first
  • Swelling peaks 2-3 days post op
  • Ice packs are usually used for the first 72 hours post op and then you switch to warm packs (very soothing)
  • Speaking will require some effort for the first week
  • Laughing is very painful and will be painful for about a month
  • Drooling should be lessened greatly compared to the day of the surgery
  • The bowels will be normal at 2-3 days post op since a pure liquid diet is stopped and thicker liquids can be ingested instead although the pain medication can still cause constipation
  • Eating is done purely by liquid and getting used it is difficult
  • Pain and discomfort will still persist so pain medication should still be used
  • Some feeling comes back to the face but numbness will still be there
  • Oral hygiene is difficult since the lip is numb and your facial muscles are really stiff but must be kept up (follow surgeons instructions on this one!)
  • Between days 6-7 you should have much more strength and become more active in doing things on with less help

Weeks 2-3: Way Easier than the First Week!

  • More feeling and mobility should come back to your face
  • Sleeping should not be a problem anymore
  • You could return to work since most of your energy will be back between the 2-3 week post op time frame (walking and being active is recommended because it helps with recovery)
  • Swelling should be noticeably going down
  • Diet is still liquid but the surgeon may allow you to eat soft foods such as mashed potatoes (or anything you could blend with a blender!) with a spoon if he/she thinks it is okay to open the jaw
  • Residual surgery pain should not be a problem anymore starting at around week 2

Week 4: 1 Month Has Passed!

  • More of the swelling should be down
  • Diet is still liquid and/or soft food based
  • Energy should be fully returned
  • Elastics will be snapping because the jaw should have more mobility to open wider
  • Talking is much easier
  • The pain caused from laughing should be greatly lessened or not exist at all
  • You might start having the pins/needles feel around your face which indicates that the numbness in your face is starting to go away

Weeks 5-7:

  • Swelling should be noticeably less but not completely gone
  • Diet will still be liquid and or soft foods
  • Stitches in your mouth should be fully dissolved
  • Numbness should almost be gone but remember that for some people it could take up to a year!

Week 8: 2 Months Have Passed!

  • .This is when the day of all days happens! Your 2 month post-op appointment with the doctor results in an x-ray of the jaw which leads to his or her approval to eat SOLID food again!
  • Most if not all swelling should be gone but as with numbness swelling can take up to a year to go away
  •  Lip mobility should be normal now which means you will see your full smile post op

Weeks 9-11:

  • Your extremely happy that you can finally eat SOLID food again!
  • Swelling should be completely gone
  • Eating solid foods results in the strengthening of the facial muscles
  • You'll be able to open your jaw more
  • Did I mention you'll be happy to be able to eat SOLID foods?

Week 12: 3 Month Mark-The Jaw Surgery Journey is Finally Over!

  • Surgeon gives you permission to make an appointment with the orthodontist to continue orthodontic treatment (although this could occur after the Surgeon gives you the okay to eat solid food)
  • That's all folks! If healing has gone normally, then you should be completely done with the jaw surgery experience!

Well, it's 6 days post op for me now.. This timeline so far seems pretty darn accurate! Thanks for that!!! So, here's a question... How is it that I drool like a dog but I have an incredibly dry mouth! Crazy!! Drinking ( or shall I say syringing ) lots of water:)

@TB I'm glad my timeline helps! And to answer your question. After having jaw surgery, your gingiva (gums) becomes very numb and you can no longer sense the fact that you have saliva. You should slowly, over the course of your recovery, get your sensation back but be extremely patient with everything. Good luck to you on your recovery! If you have anymore questions don't hesitate to ask.

I am n day 4 after surgery I did not hv to be wired shut ..I broke my jaw n 2 places I had 2 titanium plates put in...I had lots of concerns til I found this post...the numbness feeling in my chin/jaw and lower lip was freaking me out a lot and probably still will till it starts coming back.....The swelling and pain is there but pain is bearable with meds..One question I have is do I continue with ice packs or do I apply heat now?

Did anyone get ear pain always when I go to sleep frequent ear pain, I also took out four wisdom teeth :(

Fred G said...

@Khaled Akari
You'll be eating in no time. Time goes so much faster when waiting for that day. Ear pain is normal because many of our cranial nerves overlap in our face and the pressure from the swelling may be brushing up against it causing your ear pain. I would talk to your doctor about it if the pain is unmanageable with your current pain medication.

Pretty accurate timeline; as I am encountering what you mention here at the same times in my current post-orthognathic-surgery recovery period. Thanks for this timeline!

I am on day 6 post Op for both upper and lower jaw corrections, and this has been very accurate so far! The only thing that was not discussed but has been an issue has been nasal congestion making it very hard to breath during the swelling phase. I came out of the surgery very congested and found that I was not able to sleep for long periods of time from day 2-6 because I just couldn't breath through my nose well at all. Other than that I will tell you that the pain was a LOT less than what I was expecting, it's more just discomfort than anything. To anyone going into this surgery just know it is not as bad as you are expecting and after all said and done you will be very happy you've had it done!

I am 51 days post-op. My face still has numbness around lips. I'm doing therapy at home prescribed by my doctor. I am using tongue depressors daily to help get my mouth back open. Slow results. My gums are numb which affects teeth brushing and eating. Swelling is still visible. It seems that the bottom of my jaws is where the fluid is the worst. Looking forward to Christmas when this will hopefully just be a bad memory. If I knew now how this process would be I'd have kept my under bite.

I 18 days posts-op. I have plates on the left lower jaw. it is sometimes painful at least I have painkillers. My question is: is it possible for the screws to be broken or become loose as Im feeling like my jaw is not tight like immediately after the operation......

Wish I had read these comments 3 weeks ago but was too exhausted. I am 37 days post op from a hiking fall onto my face. Impacted 4 teeth, broken upper jaw and 4 bones in cheek and sinuses. Wired for 3 weeks. Trillion smoothies. Idea for you all- borrowed a Vitamix and blended and whirred almonds, pumpkin seeds, almond milk Nd fruits with whey and hemp powder. Still starving, but wires re off now. Numb and soreness in teeth

Visiting dentist every other day to adjust bite that has changed. Thank you for encouragement at 2 month mark. Humbling experience to say the least. Pain of wire removal the WORST. Did you have anaesthetic for that procedure???

Just had surgery on the 16th. I have to say a lot of this was helpful, but I haven't had any pain to speak of. My throat hurts the worst and I feel a little bruised. I was terrified going into the surgery not knowing what to expect. I wish I would have found this before. But wanted to put my experience out there so others know that not everyone's experience is the same. I haven't taken any pain meds. It was a much better experience than I was thinking it would be.

It has been 1 week as of today since my surgery. Recovery has been pure hell and am starving, nauseous, weak and light headed constantly. Only liquids and puree soups. Most soups with chunks of anything are impossilbe. My lower lip is split and in pain as well as facial and jaw joint pain- hour by hour is misery day and night. Unable to sleep throughout the night, from hunger. My jaw feels like it is made of stone and not even part of by body. My lower lip feels like a paralyzed piece of rotting of meat dangling and aggravated every 10 times a day that I need to remove and install the elastics to hold the splint in place before and after consuming liquids or soups. Swelling is way down (due to my 5 days of constant icing) and almost look normal, but nobody can truly know what is going on inside you and the misery (including psychological) one must endure.

I'm in week 5 of post lower jaw surgery. I still can't feel my chin or lower lip. I just want my face back. any ideas how i can speed it up . Should I still be using heat to help?

Literally had my surgery 24 hours ago. Got a titanium plate in my lower left jaw and then arch bars and tight elastic bands to keep my mouth shut completely. They also removed an impacted wisdom tooth while they were in there because the surgeon said it was "getting in the way" haha.. Weird thing is my numbness is literally already gone(not drooling, can feel my entire lip and chin area) which I wasn't expecting. I was figuring it would take months so that caught me off guard. Swelling not too bad yet either.

Unknown said...

Not even 24 hours post op. Hopefully my body coordinates with this timeline not in that much pain just more discomfort than anything. Glad I came across this very reassuring

I have lower jaw surgery in 3 weeks. I am very anxious about waking up after surgery and having tight elastic band to keep mouth shout. Will I take panic attack?

I'm on day 6 post op. Today is a good day!!
Day of my surgery I had no bands fitted, everything was manageable, lots of blood tho!
Day 1 post, I had random energy, could eat youghurt and was able to walk around. No pain and could go home
Day 2 post, same again. Scrambled egg (really mushy) was a god send.
Day 3 post, I got bands :( they are the worst and cause earach so bad! This was the worst day!!
Day 4/5 post, I slept a lot. Lots of pain and aches. Soooooo much dribble, but I can burst the outside of my teeth and use mouthwash.
Day 6 post, the pain is manageable again. I take the bands of to brush my teeth and I have more energy. Still lots of dribble. My chin and bottom lip are numb, in still bruised, but the swelling is going down.

When you get to a week it gets better, and the first week has gone so fast! It's horrible, but you can get through.

I am already desperate to eat meat!

I had the lower jaw surgery on 2 september /2016
Since that date , I have wires ( instead of elastics ) to keep my mouth closed , The worst thing is that i have a nasogastric tube passing through my pharynx , my mom feeds me through it but of course i feel no taste at all. This has been done to keep my teeth and gums clean ( cz i have acute gingivitis) . I feel a sore throat all the time , my saliva is thick and i have to swallow it all the time , my chin and lower lip is completely numb , i never talk because of the wires and the saliva , i have been like that since more than a month.
The doctor promised me to remove all of the wires and the tube as well in a week , my question is that , wil i be able to swallow food after removing the tube ? Will i be able to talk with all this saliva in my mouth?
Bcz it's so hard for me now fo swallow some water.
Please help me i've suffered a lot .

Had my jaw surgery on Sep 21 2016...the timeline is pretty accurate, but it shouldn't discourage anyone if they are not within the same guidelines..we are all different. I had zero pain after surgery and didn't take any pain pills, but I am on week 7 now and I feel like i have to relearn how to talk. I am not use to all my teeth touching and talking and chewing feels like i am using a different mouth (and I am). Good luck to all my fellow jaw surgery survivors out there. One thing we can be sure of, it WILL get better.

I had a single break and I'm in my third week and I had arch bars and elastic put on nothing else no surgery how much longer before I can take them off

I had upper jaw surgery on November.3 (just over 2 weeks ago)
Was not wired shut, just elastics.
I am already eating just about anything i want. Chips (crushed into bits then eaten with a spoon) Chicken (cut into little tiny pieces) Eating triscuit crackers right now actually. Does anybody know if this this bad for my healing?

Fred G said...

@BrentPeters Unless your doctor didn't give you the okay to eat then I would strongly suggest you don't. The maxillary fracture used in upper jaw surgery does not heal in two weeks and chewing will only prolong recovery due to microinjuries you're producing by using your jaw to chew. You are probably not feeling any pain from chewing because the nerves supplying your face have not returned yet... Nerve senation usually will not return for a couple more weeks. Please talk to your surgeon and follow your post operative directions to avoid complications!
